CT Scanning

CT Scanning at Taverham Vets

Computer Tomography (CT) Scanning is most associated with human medicine but over the past few years, it has become increasingly common in the veterinary world. Taking detailed x-ray images of your pet, the procedure works in the same way as it does for humans – and offers the same benefits, if not more!

Benefits of CT Scanning for Pets

CT scanning provides a non-invasive way to obtain detailed x-ray images of pets. The images generated provide our veterinary team with a comprehensive understanding of a pet's internal systems, aiding in:

  • Accurate Diagnostics: By providing clear images of bones, organs, and tissues, CT scans help identify conditions that might not be visible through regular x-rays.
  • Orthopaedic Assessments: Detailed imaging is crucial for diagnosing and planning treatments for bone and joint issues.
  • Tumour Staging: CT scans help in accurately identifying the size and location of tumors, critical for effective treatment planning.
  • Surgical Planning: Veterinary Surgeons use CT images to plan procedures with precision, potentially reducing surgery time and improving outcomes.

CT Scanning at Taverham Veterinary Hospital

At Taverham Veterinary Hospital, an in-house CT scanning service is available for pets requiring detailed investigations. The hospital is equipped with a state-of-the-art Siemens 16-slice scanner, providing fast, efficient and detailed imaging of patients.

How CT Scanning Works

CT scanning involves a continuous beam of x-rays that rotate around the pet, housed in a doughnut-shaped support known as a gantry. The process is swift, typically taking only a few minutes, depending on the animal's size and the area being examined.

The Imaging Process

  1. X-ray Rotation: The x-ray tube spins around the patient, capturing numerous x-ray slices.
  2. Image Compilation: These slices are compiled by sophisticated software into 3D images.
  3. Analysis: The veterinary team interpret these images to diagnose conditions and plan treatments.
